Blue – A Black European Tale

In a child's bedroom, a story takes shape: One day, as Blue Kid rushes out of his house in Green-Land he forgets to paint himself. He immediately faces negative consequences, but it leads him to discover other Blues that don't seem to hide behind green paint. This inspires Blue Kid to embark on a journey to collect their tales – an adventure that forces him to face his fears.
This tale is spun by Mwita Mataro and six Black children. Meanwhile, Mwita is facing the same questions of identity in his own life. Like Blue Kid, he decides to set off on a cinematic journey through Austria. In conversations with experts Mwita reflects on belonging, agency and visibility within the diaspora. These encounters are weaved together with intimate diary footage and the lovingly hand-animated adventure of Blue Kid.
Profound yet playful, Blue opens up a new perspective on Black masculinity, Black European identity, and everyday life in a society that so often denies participation.
